Elfnesh Alemu, a top-ten finisher in two Olympic and two World Championship marathons, began her 26.2-mile journey in 1993, completing over 30 marathons with exceptional consistency. She earned third place in her 2002 Boston Marathon debut and secured second in 2004 and 2005. In 2004, she finished fourth at the Olympics. Alemu won the Tokyo Marathon in 2003 and holds the San Blas Half Marathon course record with a 1:12:57 finish (2005).
Raised in Bekoji among 11 siblings, Elfnesh married Gezahegne Abera in a historic 2003 ceremony at Addis Ababa Stadium, attended by 25,000 guests. Her record-breaking 600-foot wedding veil was cut into 1,000 pieces for an HIV/AIDS awareness pledge. Her bridal party featured champions Fatuma Roba and Derartu Tulu. She trains with Ethiopia’s national marathon team.
